The need for executive leadership capability in Australasian libraries has never been greater!

CAVAL is proud to offer Australasia's only executive leadership program dedicated to preparing senior library and information managers for appointments at Director-level and above.

The CAVAL Executive Leadership Program offers a unique executive learning and development experience inspired by lighthouse business and library leadership programs within Australia and overseas.


2010 Program

Applications for the second program will be called in early 2010 and will be open to applicants from across all library sectors in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Participants will again be selected on merit, based on four criteria:

  • Demonstrated potential to progress to executive levels of leadership within large and complex organisations;
  • Potential to contribute significantly to the strategic goals of their organisation;
  • Capacity to commit the necessary time and energy required to derive full benefit from the CAVAL Horizon experience; and,
  • Commitment from their employer or an alternative sponsor organisation.


Inaugural Program

The inaugural Horizon program featured two intensive residential workshops in Melbourne (October 2008) and Sydney (February 2009), individual projects, group teleworkshops and executive coaching.

The program was expertly facilitated by executive trainers Annie Talve and Monica Redden of Make Stuff Happen, and Richard Sayers, Director, Capability Development at CAVAL.

Four respected Industry Leaders guided the inaugural program: Andrew Wells (University of New South Wales), Margaret Allen (CEO, State Library of WA), Graham Black (CQ University), and John Arfield (University of Western Australia).  All contributed a wealth of knowledge, insights and real-world executive experience.


Application Process

The 2010 cohort of sixteen dynamic individuals will be selected on merit, based on four key criteria:

  • Demonstrated potential to progress to executive levels of leadership within large and complex organisations;
  • Potential to contribute significantly to the strategic goals of their organisation, and the wider higher education sector;
  • Capacity to commit the necessary time and energy required to derive full benefit from the CAVAL Executive Leadership experience; and,
  • Commitment from their employer or an alternative sponsor organisation.

To apply, eligible individuals should:

  • Address the four key criteria succinctly in writing – no more than two pages;
  • Provide a supporting statement from their employer or alternative sponsor organisation; and,
  • Include a current CV.

All applications will be treated in strictest confidence.

The closing date for applications was Friday 28th May 2010.

Support documents should be emailed in Microsoft Word format or Adobe PDF to leadership@caval.edu.au with “Executive Leadership 2010 Application <your name>” in the subject.

Email attachments should not exceed 2MB total size.


Successful applicants will be decided by Friday 11th June 2010 and ALL applicants notified of the outcome of their applications within five working days.
