Information technology (IT) is in a pivotal position in libraries as we expand beyond computers, networks, and systems into the fluid and dynamic virtual world of social networking, Web 2.0, the NextGen OPAC, open source software, and other emerging technologies. Developments often seem to be at warp speed as library IT staff attempt to provide leadership while managing technology growth and user expectations. This one day course provides a broad overview of the perspectives, practices and strategies in leadership of library IT services. The course explores approaches, factors, and strategies that contribute towards successful leadership.

May Chang is Head of Library IT Services at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, US. With senior leadership and managerial positions in academic and special libraries since 1990, she has developed an extensive background in IT services, web design and development, and strategic planning and development of IT resources and services. She presents and leads workshops on topics including web applications, CMS, Next Gen OPAC, and emerging technologies. She also conducts sessions on management and leadership issues, and has participated in the Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians. May has LIS degrees from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, US, and has worked in Asia Pacific countries, UK, and is currently based in the US.
